Free verse

Now the free verse in which most of this new writing is emerging is indeed releasing.  I’m grateful that it exists, that it exists to release me, and it exists only because others have forged it for me over a century or more.  Yet I sense something about this free verse slackening my hold on my own projects.  That is why I have also, often, carved it up into couplets, triplets, even quatrains: I appreciate that extra touch of rigidity and design that the refusal of metre by itself cannot enable.  Whenever lyric meets up with free verse (no matter how disciplined), the risk and all too often the effect is of writing in one’s journal.  Daily writing.  Good.  Keep it up.  But it might be that the demanding work you wish to feel flowing from your hands will need a different versification.  A versification that says, there is more than my diary here.  Read me hard.
